Rebecca has been painting and drawing since childhood. She’s worked in many different media over the years, including printmaking, animation, sculpture, and photography. But painting is her first and greatest love. Currently she uses gouache, watercolors and acrylics in combination with oil pastels. Small-scale pieces on paper prove to be an easy format for painting on location – a process that enables her to have an immediate experience with her subject.

Growing up in Berkeley, CA where neighborhoods were more placid and suburban, she has a deep love for the visual rawness of life in NYC. Aesthetically, she’s inspired by the layered quality of the urban landscape. The textures and patterns seem endless and each block has a unique story and history; the density is mind-boggling. One of the wonderful things about her neighborhood in Astoria, Queens, is the millions of vibrant colors. She is constantly in awe of the beauty and diversity of the people, their clothing, storefronts, produce, and graffiti.

Other than architecture, portraits are a favorite subject. She thinks, similar to the cityscapes (which can capture the energy of a city) that the essence of the person – their character and personality are more important to convey than every tiny physical detail. She also enjoys drawing from her imagination.

She currently works as a freelance designer in publishing and home fashion.
